FAQ

When does a BC strata kitchen or bathroom renovation need written approval?

Check your strata's registered bylaws and strata plan before booking demolition. B.C.'s Standard Bylaws, where they have not been amended, require written strata approval for changes involving the building structure, exterior, certain doors or windows, common property within a strata lot, or parts the strata corporation must insure. A kitchen or bathroom job can touch these areas even when most of the work is inside your unit. Your strata may also have its own alteration rules for flooring, plumbing or electrical work.

Send the property manager or council a short scope, drawings or photos, and details of any work affecting shared systems. Ask for a written decision and any conditions before work starts. Strata approval and municipal or trade permits are separate checks. If your plans are still changing, resolve those details first so the approved scope matches the work quoted by your interior renovation contractor.
